What is Terminal Server ?
A Terminal Server makes it possible to run Microsoft Windows applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc on your computer without installing. The programmes are installed on a multi user application server, which is managed by ICT Service. This server is called MUST ( Multi User Scheikundige Technologie ).
You need the program Remote Desktop Connection which is installed standard on Windows XP to make a connection to the terminal server.
This program can be found through "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection". The server name that needs to be filled in is "must.chem.tue.nl".
The Terminal Server is usefull for people who work from a remote location ( for example from home ), or use linux / unix / macintosh as Operating system and and occasionaly use Office tools like Outlook, Word, Powerpoint etc.
Other possible advantages of terminal server are :
- Extend lifetime of computers.
Because the Terminal Server client-sofware uses very little resources it is possible to run Windows programs on an obsolete computer.
- Thin Client.
It is possible to run windows applications on the terminal server from a small and cheap thin client PC.
- Work from home ( or from other remote locations ).
Because the applications run entirely on the server it is possible to edit large files without having to transfer the files to your PC.
The following software is installed on the Terminal Server:
All students and employees may use Terminal Server. Students need permission from the education director.
