Welcome to the group of functional organic materials and devices (SFD)

Our research group aims at the generation of new functional organic materials and devices in the areas of sustainable energy, air and water management, and personal comfort and health.

We use a complete chain of knowledge i.e. from synthesis to device fabrication. Our materials are made by molecular, nano- & macro-structuring of organics utilizing top-down and bottom-up strategies in which molecular design and synthesis, processing and device integration play an important role. The bottom-up structuring of polymers is often performed via self-organization of liquid crystals and their polymeric analogs. The main motivation for using liquid crystals or reactive mesogens is their ability to self-organize into defect-free, monolithic structures with a wide variety of molecular architectures.

As a toolbox a variety of skills are used including organic chemistry, self-assembly, liquid crystallinity, and techniques such as embossing, printing, deposition methods. Valorization of our scientific research is performed via knowledge transfer to multinationals, small & medium size companies and start-ups.
